Crafting Skills. Shaping Futures.

A 10-Week Program for Future Woodworkers

The Young Makers Academy is a comprehensive, hands-on woodworking program designed for older children (starting from 10 years old) who are eager to dive into the world of woodworking.

Over the course of 10 weeks, students will gain essential knowledge of timber technology, safety etiquette, hand tool anatomy, sharpening techniques, and much more. This foundational phase equips participants with the confidence and skills needed to master hand tools and woodworking processes.

The first term of this Sloyd-based program sets the stage for more advanced work by focusing on gradual skill-building.

By the end of these initial 10 weeks, participants will be challenged to design and make a mallet—applying the techniques they’ve learned.

This serves as a critical milestone as they prepare for the next level in their woodworking journey.

What to Expect

Each session runs for 1 hour and 45 minutes, held every Friday from 2 PM to 3:45 PM at The Makers Society. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants will explore both the theoretical and practical aspects of woodworking.

Throughout the first term, students will learn:

Timber Technology: Understanding the types of wood, their properties, and how they influence woodworking choices.

Safety Etiquette: Learning the best practices for staying safe in the workshop.

Hand Tool Anatomy: Gaining a detailed understanding of common woodworking tools and their proper usage.

Sharpening Techniques: Mastering how to maintain sharp tools for effective and precise work.

Measuring and Marking: Laying the groundwork for precision in cutting, shaping, and assembling wood.
Design Basics: Introducing the concepts of functional design in woodworking projects.

The highlight of this course is the final project, where students will create a wooden mallet using all the skills and knowledge gained during the term. This project emphasizes self-sufficiency, problem-solving, and craftsmanship.

Measuring and Cutting: Crafting simple components like a coaster to understand proportions and precision.

Sharpening Station Setup: Students will learn to sharpen chisels and planes to maintain their tools.

Mallet Creation: A culminating project where students independently design, measure, and construct their own mallet, applying all the skills learned in this first term.
