What You’ll Learn: Woodworking Foundations Course

The Foundations Course is a hands-on introduction to both traditional hand tools and modern woodworking machines. You’ll learn the fundamental skills every woodworker needs—taught by expert tutors in a fully equipped workshop.

  • Timber Technology: Understand how different wood species behave and how to choose the right one.

  • Sharpening Techniques: Learn how to maintain a razor-sharp edge on your tools.

  • Hand Tool Skills: Use chisels, hand planes, marking tools, and saws with control and precision.

  • Machine & Power Tool Operation: Get trained on Felder and Hammer machines with a focus on safety and efficiency.

  • Joinery Fundamentals: Practice clean, strong joints like dados, rabbets, and dovetails.

  • Finishing Techniques: Sanding, oiling, and other methods to protect and elevate your work.

Course Format & Workshop Access

The Woodworking Foundations Course runs over three focused weeks. You’ll attend weekend classes for expert-led instruction, and use weekday hours for project work and mentorship.

Projects You’ll Build

  • Japanese-style side table (solid wood joinery, clean design)

  • Hand made bread board (made in the hand tools class)

Bring Your Own Tools or Purchase a Starter Kit

To ensure you build the right habits from the start, our Foundations Course is taught using professional-grade hand tools.

Students are expected to work with their own toolset during the course, which supports personal familiarity and skill development.

If you don’t already own tools, we’ve curated a Starter Kit available for purchase at The Makers Society. It includes everything you need to get started and is selected based on quality, ease of use, and long-term reliability.

These are the same tools used by instructors and seasoned woodworkers, giving you a seamless learning experience in and beyond the course.

Essential Tools Checklist

  • Chisels (recommended set of 4: 6mm, 12mm, 18mm, 24mm)

  • Block plane or Bench plane

  • Japanese hand saw (Ryoba or Dozuki)

  • Marking gauge

  • Marking knife

  • Combination square

  • Steel ruler (150mm or 300mm)
